The inaugural Webb Ellis Womens Cup Final played on the all weather facility at Hornets RFC proved to be third time lucky for Bath Ladies after the Cats had won both league fixtures in Womens NC South West North 2.
The Bath ’BaBas’ squad featuring a number of unfamiliar faces gave the Cats some valuable experience against players used to Womens Championship South West 2.
In outside half Sarah Holloway they had a kicker accurate enough to convert eight of their ten tries in addition to scoring a try of her own. Flanker Alice Evans grabbed four tries and had that extra yard of pace that the Cats struggled to cope with and together with winger Abigail Johnson who scored three tries, they were probably the difference between the teams.
The Cats had their own stars throughout the team, their defence made Bath work hard for their scores and in Outside half Fiona Penfold they had the cutting edge as she scored 4 tries.
The Cats front row of Hannah Olsen, Sarah Blyth and Emily Taylor had their opposite numbers in all sorts of trouble in the first half with several strikes against the head and in the close quarter exchanges the Cats forwards were effective going forward with strong carries from skipper Hannah Pearce and Second row Lauren Glover who scored a try set up by her fellow forwards with a series of pick and go moves close in.
Ultimately the Bath squad had more experience and a bit more gas in critical positions and a stronger bench ultimately tipped the balance.
Every match the Cats play sees them gain more experience and this a competition they will be looking forward to taking part in next season.
