Comedian Milton Jones and TV presenter Josie D’Arby joined a Churchill-based project Men Get Cooking! as they baked savoury Red Nose Tarts to celebrate Red Nose Day.
The BBC camera crew filmed Milton Jones as he rolled up his sleeves, donned an ‘I’m supposed to be retired’ apron and bantered with the men while rubbing in the cheese pastry. While everyone chose their own individual fillings off camera, Josie was tempted by the delicious produce to quickly throw together her own quiche.
Once baked, Milton’s chorizo quiche with carefully positioned cherry tomatoes was checked by Josie for any sign of ‘soggy bottom’. In the all important Taste Test, Milton’s Red Nose Tart was judged unanimously “Gert lush!”….a term which had to be explained!
The Men Get Cooking! initiative has helped men from across the Chew Valley and Wrington Vale with attendees coming from Chew Magna, Wrington and the far flung hamlets of the Chew Valley. Sponsored by Comic Relief as well as Mall Fountain Fund, Quartet Foundation and Churchill Methodist Church the six week course offers encourages men to feel confident when it comes to cooking teaching them safe knife skills, food safety, healthy eating and shopping economically.
Asked why Men Get Cooking! has been such a success, cookery tutor Jacquelene Seel said “It’s easy to learn new skills when you’re enjoying yourself in a small friendly and the satisfaction of eating dishes made to your personal taste or dietary requirements is a huge incentive to keep coming. Many men share their meals at home or with friends, so they do enjoy the feedback too.”
If you want to have a laugh whilst learning to cook, the next courses are due to start on Tuesday 28 March in Churchill and Friday 7 July in Winscombe. For more details call Jacquelene Seel 01934 844134.
The BBC visit will be broadcast as part of Songs of Praise on Sunday 19th March.
