Four Chew Valley Cats were selected to represent their County in the first round of the Gill Burns Women’s County Rugby Championship.
Tight head prop Hannah Olsen was in the starting line-up, with Sam Jackson, Lauren Glover and Daisy Pearce-Lyons on the bench for the match against Buckinghamshire RFC Women on Sunday 23rd April.
It was a 14 try thriller, with Bucks outside centre S Graham crossing the line 6 times for her team. Four of Somerset’s tries were by Bristol Ladies and two from Hornettes RFC. Other teams represented playing for Somerset were North Petherton Ladies and Yeovil Ladies.
There was good support for both teams: some of the Bucks supporters made a weekend of it and brought their caravans to the pitch.
Hannah’s handling skills were in evidence as well as her strength in the scrum. Second row forward Lauren ran some big carries, making the hard yards, needing several tacklers to bring her down. Daisy, playing at outside centre, tackled at her normal ferocious standard. Two Somerset tries resulted from turnover ball after she brought Bucks running backs to ground.
Sam was all over the place in the loose, busy tackling, rucking and running. She played flanker, and was chuffed that she was the oldest forward playing for Somerset!
Cats captain Hannah Pearce, who was pitch side, said she was really pleased with her girls. They all played really well and did the Cats proud.
Final score 32 v 44.
Somerset Ladies next match is on Sunday, when they take on Hertfordshire Ladies in Hertford.
